The afternoon half-day visit is the gentlest way to see Elephant Nature Park, the sanctuary north of Chiang Mai that gives a home to rescued elephants living in their own chosen herds. It suits families with young children, anyone short on time, and people who would rather watch elephants than get muddy with them. The highlight is the big herd walking down to the river and bathing before heading to their night shelter.

Pickup is around midday in Chiang Mai city and the drive north takes about an hour and a half. On arrival a park guide walks you around the sanctuary, telling the stories of the elephants you meet and explaining how the herd lives. In the late afternoon there is a snack break with seasonal fruit, tea, coffee and soft drinks, then you watch the elephants make their way to the river. Around 5:00 pm you leave for the hour-long drive back to Chiang Mai.

Elephant Nature Park does not allow riding and the visit is about observing rather than handling the animals. Wear comfortable shoes, bring a hat and sunscreen, and keep luggage to one small daypack. Strollers are not allowed on site.

Bookings open up to 180 days ahead; the latest date you can book is Wed 21 Apr 2027.
