A half day built around one thing: two hours of ATV riding on dirt tracks in the hills of Mae Taeng, about an hour north of Chiang Mai. It suits anyone who wants an off-road morning without committing a whole day, and it works for first-timers because the quads are automatic with a thumb throttle. No motorbike licence or experience is needed.

You are collected at your hotel and driven out to the camp at Kaeng Kued, a family-run base on the Mae Taeng river where the same people also keep rescued elephants and run rafting trips. After a short briefing and a practice loop you follow your guide out onto the trails. The route runs through forest, over rocky and muddy sections and along the riverbank, and the pace is set for enjoyment rather than speed, so the guide keeps the group together. Two hours is long enough to get comfortable, get muddy and cover a good stretch of the valley. Lunch is served at the camp before the drive back to town.

Wear closed shoes and clothes you do not mind ruining, and bring a change of clothes for the ride home. Drinking water, insurance and an English-speaking guide are included.

Bookings open up to 180 days ahead; the latest date you can book is Wed 21 Apr 2027.
